Collaborative Set List

The thought of collaboratively building set lists gives me indigestion. But in practice, I always walk away so grateful for the opportunity to serve together. To find small ways to die to myself, and learn alongside of others who desire to serve the Lord and his people.

One of the things that has surprised me is how often I’ve met worship leaders who can lead songs but have never been taught how to build a set list. They know how to lead a song but not how to run a rehearsal. They know how to choose a key, but can’t lead the liturgy of the gathering.

At the end of the day, I believe that part of a leader’s main responsibility is to grow other leaders - I hope that regardless of your context or experience you are intentionally pursuing opportunities to develop other leaders. And I think that find a few people who can work together to collaboratively build a set list is a great place to start.

A few things that I have learned along the way:

  • People are more eager to serve, and take responsibility than you might expect - just ask.

  • You need to have clarity on your philosophy of worship.

  • It is easy to become frustrated and pull in different directions when you are not working from a shared understanding of the purpose of the corporate gathering - have you articulated this generally at your church, as well as specifically for this day?

  • You need to articulate the rhythms of how to build a set list - particularly for those who have never had the opportunity to do this before, help them understand the why, not just the what.

  • There are benefits to co-leading, but the more ownership you can give your fellow leaders, the more we all will grow.

  • Recognize that we all have preferences, don’t throw your weight around to get your way. Allow space for others to learn, and allow their own personality, skills, and gifts to shine through.

What would you add?

  • THE GREATNESS OF OUR GOD

God is great, and He is good, and He is kind. And he could have chosen to reveal nothing of Himself to us. But we know from Scripture that God is three persons in one God - the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. This morning is Trinity Sunday, the day in the Church calendar when we recognize and celebrate the work of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in salvation. The Church calendar, unlike the calendar that we follow as modern, western people, is oriented around the life of Jesus. So we are going to take a moment to pray these ancient words as we set our attention and affection on the person and work of the Trinity:

Glory to the Father who created us;

Glory to the Son who redeemed us;

Glory to the Spirit who sanctifies us;

Glory to the most high and undivided Trinity.

Whose work is inseparable,

Whose kingdom abides,

World without end,

Amen.

A Trinity Sunday, Prayer of St Augustine

Sermon: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

Scripture says that we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. And when Christ returns His glory will be undeniable because the glory of God will cover the earth like the waters cover the sea. Let’s set our attention and affection on the One who has come and is coming again. Would you stand if you’re able, we’ll sing together…

  • HYMN OF HEAVEN

  • RAISE UP THE CROWN (ALL HAIL THE POWER)

Benediction

12 November: Liturgy + Set List

  • GRACE ALONE

Let’s hear God call us to worship from His word - if you are here this morning as a follower of Jesus, this is what is true of you:

    Call to Worship: Romans 5:1-6

We are justified by faith, have peace with God, we have access and faith, we stand in grace, we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God, our suffering is not meaningless, God has poured His love into our hearts, we have been given the Holy Spirit, we are weak, but Christ has died for us. Those are reasons to sing and celebrate:

  • GLORIOUS DAY

  • I STAND AMAZED (HOW MARVELOUS)

    Sermon: Mark 12:18-27

When my family lived in England, every funeral would begin with the entire congregation gathered outside and together we would walk in reading this passage:

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. (Psalm 23)

In life and in death, and in the life to come - if you are in Christ - goodness and mercy will follow after you, would you stand if you’re able and we’ll sing together:

  • GOODNESS OF GOD

  • LIVING HOPE

    Benediction

13 August: Liturgy + Set List

  • BEFORE THE THRONE

    Call to Worship: Psalm 96

This is why we gather - not to respond to songs or sermons, but to respond to the God who has revealed Himself. Revealed Himself in His Word, in His creation, and through His Son, Jesus. We are here to respond to the wonderful works and majesty of God - let’s sing together:

  • THE GREATNESS OF OUR GOD

  • HOLY FOREVER

    Sermon: Titus 1:5-9

    Elder Ordination

  • CHRIST BE MAGNIFIED

    Benediction

18 June: Liturgy + Set List [Mill River]

Good afternoon and Happy Father’s Day - these holidays can often be complicated for us as people, and bring up complicated things in us. And perhaps that is compounded for you when you realize, of all the ways God could have revealed Himself, He has chosen Father. But if you’re here as a follower of Christ, you have a Heavenly Father who has only, ever, and always dealt bountifully with you. Let’s hear God call us to worship from His Word:

Call to Worship: Psalm 116:1-7

  • HOLY HOLY HOLY

  • LORD, I NEED YOU

  • BUILD MY LIFE

    Sermon: Galatians 2:11-14

16 April: Liturgy + Set List

  • ALL CREATURES OF OUR GOD AND KING

    Call to Worship: Psalm 121

Life Church, what is your only hope and help? It is not found within yourself. It is not your ability to pull yourself up by your bootstraps, try harder, be better, or do more. No, your help and hope is always and only the person of Jesus. And that reality should thrill our hearts and fuel our worship this morning. We opened our Easter gathering last week with this song, and we are going to sing it together. It moves quickly, so we’ll teach you the chorus first:

  • REJOICE

  • THE GREATNESS OF OUR GOD

    Sermon: Mark 6:30-44

God always meets us in the desolate places. Sometimes with loaves and fishes, always with the blessed, broken, and given life of Christ. Only a Holy God, only a Holy God, only a Holy God. Would you stand if you’re able, we’ll sing together:

  • ONLY A HOLY GOD

  • RAISE UP THE CROWN (ALL HAIL THE POWER)

    Benediction

9 April: Liturgy + Set List

REJOICE

Welcome + Call to Worship: Psalm 111:1-4, 9

  • AND CAN IT BE

  • ALL HAIL KING JESUS

Let’s confess what we believe and what we celebrate this morning. I will read the parts marked ‘Leader,’ and together we’ll read the parts marked ‘All’:

Corporate Prayer:

Leader: Alleluia! Christ is risen.

All: He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

Leader: Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

All: He has given us new life and hope.

He has raised Jesus from the dead.

Leader: God has claimed us as his own.

All: He has brought us out of darkness.

He has made us light to the world.

Leader: Alleluia! Christ is risen.

All: He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

—based on 1 Peter 1:3-5 [From the Worship Sourcebook]

Sermon: Ephesians 2:4-7

Scripture tells us that we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Let’s sing this morning in light of that day - the further up, and further in revelation of God’s glory. Would you stand if you’re able:

  • O PRAISE THE NAME (ANÁSTASIS)

  • SON OF SUFFERING

    Benediction: 1 Peter 1:3-4

19 March: Liturgy + Set List

  • GRACE ALONE

Good morning and welcome to worship with us, welcome to this fourth week of Lent. If you know anything about Lent you probably know that one of the rhythms of this season is fasting, fasting from sugar, alcohol, social media, or spending money. And as we fast we are reminded of our need for rescue because we often give up things that we use to comfort or reward ourselves, numb or distract ourselves. But we don’t just fast from, we feast on. We run to the Savior and feast on the goodness, beauty and truth of the person and work of Christ. And in some small way, that is what we do together - a micro fast from all the things that we could be filling our time with this morning, but instead gathering with the people of God and feasting on the goodness, beauty, and truth of the Gospel. Don’t just go through the external motions of fasting, feast on the beauty of Jesus this morning. Let’s hear God call us to worship from His Word…

    Call to Worship: Psalm 34:1-8

  • WE ARE SAVED

  • JESUS PAID IT ALL

    Sermon: Mark 5:21-43

    Corporate Confession:

Merciful God,
We confess that we have sinned against You
in thought, word, and deed,
By what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved You with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

In Your mercy forgive what we have been,
help us amend what we are,
And direct what we shall be,
So that we may delight in your will and walk in Your ways, To the glory of Your holy name.

Through Christ, our Lord. Amen. [From the Book of Common Prayer]

  • ONLY A HOLY GOD

  • IN CHRIST ALONE

    Benediction: Ephesians 3:20-21

12 February: Liturgy + Set List

  • BEFORE THE THRONE

Let’s hear God call us to worship from His Word…

  • Call to Worship: Matthew 11:28-30

Because of Jesus, the invitation is always to draw near to God. Because of Jesus, we can come boldly before the throne of God. Let’s sing with confidence in the person and work of Jesus together:

  • WHAT YOU SAID

The reality of living in a fallen and broken world means that we can sing words like ‘God, You are good, and You do good,' and wonder if they are actually true. But what we cling to as followers of Jesus is that God Himself steps into the brokenness of our world, and will one day return to make all things new and set all things right. So what is the answer when we look at the brokenness of the world with things like 25,000 people dead, tens of thousands injured, and thousands still missing from an earthquake in Syria and Turkey? I think the answer is grief and lament. Honestly engaging the brokenness of the world, while looking with hope to our soon-returning Savior. We are going to spend some time grieving in prayer together this morning. I will read this prayer first, and then we will pray together:

Almighty God, by your Word you laid the foundations of the earth, set the bounds of the sea, and still the wind and waves. Surround the people of Syria and Turkey with grace and peace, and preserve them through these earthquakes. By your Spirit, lift up those who have fallen, strengthen those who work to rescue or rebuild, and fill them with the hope of your new creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

An Occasional Prayer During Times of Natural Disaster, Book of Common Prayer

We will spend time praying silently in these four categories:

…The people.

…The peacemakers.

…The politicians.

…The pastors.

  • HYMN OF HEAVEN

Sermon: Mark 3:7-35

Hear the good news: it is the kindness of God that leads us to repentance. Through the finished work of Christ, applied by the Holy Spirit, would you stand as we sing and celebrate that truth.

  • YET NOT I BUT THROUGH CHRIST IN ME

  • I STAND AMAZED

Benediction: Hebrew 13:20-21

  • HARK THE HERALD ANGELS SING

Call to Worship: Zechariah 13:1, Psalm 87:1-3, 7

Advent is a season of longing, and something about this season highlights for me how many of the longings and desires of my heart go unfulfilled on this side of eternity. But every desire should be an arrow that points us to the source of our greatest desire: God Himself. As we sing these Advent and Christmas songs that speak to our longings, we can be honest with God and with one another, as we look to Jesus the One who is the fulfillment of our deepest longings. Let’s sing…

  • COME THOU LONG-EXPECTED JESUS | JESUS WHAT A FRIEND FOR SINNERS

  • I SHALL NOT WANT

    Reading: Luke 2:8-21

    Sermon: John 4:1-24

Scripture tells us that no one seeks God. If you are here this morning as a follower of Jesus, you are not following Jesus because you went looking for Jesus, rather, like the woman at the well, you were searching for life, hope, and fulfillment on your own when Jesus moved toward you. He is the One that we adore because He has revealed himself to us. Would you stand if you’re able, let’s sing…

  • O COME ALL YE FAITHFUL

  • JOY TO THE WORLD (UNSPEAKABLE JOY)

    Reading: John 7:37-39

    Advent Candle Lighting/Benediction

11 December: Liturgy + Set List

  • BEHOLD

    Call to Worship: Psalm 34:1-5

Good morning and welcome to worship on this third Sunday of Advent. That is why we gather, to look to the One who is glorious, to look to the One who is fully God, and yet fully man. To the One who set aside His glory to take on our flesh in complete humility. We look to the One who made us, sustains us, redeems us, and loves us. Let’s sing…

  • GRACE ALONE

  • SILENT NIGHT (SON OF GOD, SON OF MAN)

    Reading: Luke 2:1-7

    Sermon: John 3:1-15

So many stories in Scripture close and we are left to wonder, what happened next? Do you know we see Nicodemus one other time in Scripture? When Jesus is crucified, two men come to care for His crucified body - Joseph of Arimathea, and Nicodemus. My dad says often ‘No true encounter with Christ ever leaves us the same.’ Nicodemus encountered Jesus and it didn’t just make him a better version of Himself, it made him a new person. That is what we all need - to encounter Christ and be transformed from death to life. Let’s sing in response to God’s Word preached:

  • O HOLY NIGHT (O HEAR THE GOSPEL STORY)

    Reading: Isaiah 9:2-7

    Advent Candle Lighting/Benediction
