GENESIS 2:15-17

The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

GENESIS 3:20-24

"The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them. Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life."

PSALM 8:1-5

"O Lord, our Lord,
    how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.

    Out of the mouth of babies and infants,
you have established strength because of your foes,
    to still the enemy and the avenger.

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
    the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,

what is man that you are mindful of him,
    and the son of man that you care for him?

Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
    and crowned him with glory and honor."

MATTHEW 16:24-28

"Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

Advent + Christmastide 2021 [A Free Devotional]

Living in the midst of a pandemic for the last two years has narrowed our lives.  We plan in pencil, hold expectations loosely, and maybe for the first time have wrestled and rested in the reality that, ‘The heart of man plans his ways, but the LORD establishes his steps (Proverbs 16:9).’

Advent reminds us that we live inside a larger story.  A story that cannot be thwarted by a pandemic.  A story of redemption set in motion before the breath of God awakened the dust-made man, and a story that will continue long after our bodies return to dust.   

If the last two years have left you in a fog of darkness, I hope the images of Light in this devotional will illumine Hope as you prepare your heart for the Advent of Christ.

Lord Christ,
 we confess our willingness to be loved
 but also our reluctance to love.
 We confess our readiness to accept Your forgiving love 
but also our refusal to forgive.
 We confess our eagerness to grasp Your offer of redeeming love but also our resistance to follow You without question.
 In this Advent time, forgive us our failure 
to respond as we should.
 Come to us anew, and by Your grace, assist us to receive You with joy,

as the shepherds;


with gratitude, as Simeon;


with obedience, as Mary;


with love, as You have loved us.


Even so: come, Lord Jesus. Amen.
